Factors influencing practice of standard precautions among nurses working in emergency units of UITH, Ilorin, Kwara state

Abstract
Nurses are known to be at the frontline of the risks and victims of occupational hazards within the healthcare system. These hazards include exposure to infections that may arise from injuries from sharps and contact with body fluids. Standard precautions are taken to mitigate and minimize hazards in hospitals. This study assessed the factors influencing standard precaution practices among Nurses in the emergency units of Uith, Ilorin, Kwara State. The research design is a descriptive survey method, sampling size of 85 Nurses. Data collection was via some well-structured closed-ended questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics using frequency tables, percentages and charts. The propounded hypothesis was tested using one-way ANOVA (Analysis of Variances) with the level of significance set at 0.05 to determine the level of statistical significance. The findings of the study showed that the level of knowledge of the nurses working in the accident& emergency department about standard precautions is high(87.5%), as the majority of the nurses know about standard precautions. Based on the findings, the following recommendation were made, Seminars and workshops should be organized for nurses in order to add to their knowledge on standard precautions as well as improve their attitude and practice of infection control, The hospital should ensure that strict policies are made on utilization of standard precautions especially use of personal protective equipment (PPEs) and sharp safety and Government should supply the necessary equipment to proper implementation of standard precautions in emergency units oh hospitals to improve infection control among health workers....
