Factors influencing visual impairment and blindness among students of school for special needs in Ilorin, Kwara state

Abstract
The study investigated factors influencing visual impairment and blindness among students of the Kwara State School of Special Needs, Apata Yakuba, Ilorin. A descriptive design was adopted for the study. Twenty respondents which made up  of both males and females. The objectives were to determine the socio-economic factors of the students, the causes of visual impairment and their attitude toward blindness. A self-designed questionnaire which included the above objectives, was used for data collection. The data collection was analyzed by using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences ( SPSS version 2. 0 ). The results of the findings revealed that the overall mean age of respondents was between 10 and 16 years. The respondents' significant order was traders and the low socioeconomic class; the respondents had a good attitude toward visual impairment and blindness among the respondents. Above all, there is an urgent need for the government at all levels to improve eye care and  prevent avoidable blindness...
