Abstract
Umbilical cord care are actions taken to handle the umbilical cord after delivery to ensure it does not pose a health risk to the infant. Hence, this study was carried out to assess the level of knowledge and practice of umbilical cord care among mothers attending Okelele Comprehensive Healthcare Centre, Ilorin, Kwara State. A quantitative design was used; 94 questionnaires were administered and retrieved by the researcher. Data collected was analyzed with the use of the statistical package for the service solution version 29 and was presented using frequency. The findings from the research showed that 96.7% of majority of the mothers have good knowledge of cord care practice and many of them heard about the care of umbilical cord care from the hospital; they know good cord care practice plays a significant role in the health of infants and they also know the implications of bad cord care practice. The study recommended that health care workers should collaborate with community leaders and families to foster an environment where health education is shared and valued to bridge gaps between traditional practices and modern healthcare advice on umbilical cord care. Health care workers should also ensure adequate health education of the mothers on the implications of bad cord care practices during antenatal visits...
