Abstract
Brain drain, defined as the migration of skilled professionals in search of better opportunities abroad, has become a critical challenge in Nigeria’s healthcare sector. Nurses, particularly those working in accident and emergency units, are increasingly relocating to developed countries due to poor remuneration, limited career advancement, unfavorable working conditions, and socio-political instability. This study assessed the push and pull factors influencing brain drain among nurses at Ikorodu General Hospital, Lagos State, and examined its implications for both the migrating nurses and the Nigerian healthcare system. A descriptive research design was employed, targeting nurses in adult and pediatric emergency units. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed to identify key determinants of migration. Findings revealed that push factors such as low wages, poor job satisfaction, understaffing, and insecurity strongly contribute to nurses’ decisions to leave. Pull factors, including high wages, opportunities for professional growth, recognition of expertise, and stable socio-political environments in destination countries, further accelerate migration. The study also highlighted negative consequences of brain drain, including a shortage of skilled personnel, increased workload for remaining nurses, diminished healthcare quality, and emotional challenges faced by migrant nurses, such as cultural adjustment, discrimination, and unmet expectations. The research concludes that brain drain significantly undermines Nigeria’s healthcare delivery system. Recommendations include improved remuneration, better welfare packages, enhanced working conditions, decentralization of healthcare administration, and stronger government policies to regulate migration. Addressing these factors is essential to retain skilled nurses, strengthen the healthcare workforce, and achieve sustainable health outcomes in line with global strategic directions for nursing and midwifery....
