Abstract
Family planning plays a significant role in promoting maternal and child health, yet its adoption remains suboptimal in many rural communities in Nigeria. This study assessed the knowledge, utilization, and effects of family planning among women of reproductive age in Amanuke community, Awka North Local Government Area, Anambra State. It also examined the influence of socio-demographic factors such as age and religion on family planning practices. A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed, using structured questionnaires to collect data from 270 respondents selected through a simple random sampling technique. The data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, and chi-square tests to determine significant relationships between socio-demographic variables and family planning practices. The results revealed that knowledge of family planning was relatively low, with 45.2% of respondents aware of family planning and 47.4% unaware. Utilization was poor, as 55.6% of respondents were not using any method of family planning, and 51.9% were unsure of how family planning methods prevent pregnancy. Condoms (25.9%) and abstinence (31.1%) were the most used methods. Analysis of the hypotheses showed a significant relationship between age and family planning strategies (p< 0.05) and between religion and utilization of family planning (p< 0.05). The study concludes that inadequate knowledge, cultural beliefs, and religious influences are significant barriers to effective family planning in Amanuke community. It recommends targeted health education, culturally sensitive counseling, and collaboration with community and religious leaders to improve family planning awareness and acceptance. Future studies should explore male involvement and the impact of integrated educational interventions on family planning adoption. These findings emphasize the importance of tailored interventions to address socio-demographic and cultural barriers, ultimately improving reproductive health outcomes in rural communities...
