Abstract
Trachoma, a leading cause of preventable infectious blindness, affects millions worldwide, with Nigeria facing high prevalence, particularly among children. Against this background, this study has investigated the awareness and practices of mothers regarding the role of environmental hygiene in preventing trachoma in children aged 1-10 years in Tangaza community of Sokoto State, Nigeria. The objectives of the study were: (i) to determine the level of awareness of trachoma and its preventive methods among mothers in Tangaza. (ii) To assess key environmental hygiene practices in the area, and (iii) to identify factors that influence effective hygiene practices in trachoma-endemic areas. This study adopted descriptive research design and the population of the study was 152 mothers selected using simple random sampling technique and sample size was determined using Taro Yamane's formula. Data were collected with self-structured questionnaires; the study examined the relationship between environmental hygiene practices and the incidence of trachoma. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Chi-Square test. The findings revealed a significant relationship between environmental hygiene practices and the incidence of trachoma among children in Tangaza (Pearson Chi-Square  10.500, p< 0.001). Furthermore, the findings show a significant link between mothers’ awareness of trachoma and their adoption of preventive methods (Pearson Chi-Square  4.800, p= 0.028). In conclusion, it is recommended that health authorities implement targeted health education programs focused on environmental hygiene to prevent trachoma. Additionally, local governments and NGOs should collaborate on community-based initiatives, such as hygiene clubs or sanitation campaigns, to encourage sustained hygiene practices. The government should work to improve access to clean water and sanitation facilities in Tangaza and other rural areas, while integrating environmental hygiene education and trachoma prevention into routine primary healthcare services...
