Abstract
Occupational health hazards pose significant risks to workers in high-risk environments such as abattoirs and slaughter slabs. These hazards include exposure to physical injuries, zoonotic diseases, and hazardous chemicals. This study aimed to assess the awareness, attitudes, and practices of abattoir and slaughter slab workers in Lagos State regarding occupational health hazards. A descriptive cross-sectional design was adopted, utilizing a structured questionnaire to collect data from 100 abattoir and slaughter slab workers. The questionnaire focused on socio-demographic characteristics, awareness, attitudes, and practices related to occupational health hazards. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and frequency tables. The results showed that 81% of respondents had above-average awareness of occupational health hazards, with 93% recognizing the importance of hygiene practices and 77% acknowledging the need for regular medical check-ups. Positive attitudes were prevalent, as 55% of workers agreed that protecting one’s health is as essential as task completion, though 54% believed occupational health risks are exaggerated. Practices such as PPE usage (64%) and proper waste disposal (46%) were commonly reported, though lapses, such as eating in the workplace (14%), were noted. Hypothesis testing revealed no significant relationship between years of practice and attitudes (p0.16) or between awareness and practices (p0.17). The study concludes that while awareness and attitudes are high, gaps in knowledge and inconsistent practices persist. It recommends targeted education on zoonotic diseases, stricter enforcement of workplace safety policies, and enhanced collaboration between health professionals, management, and policymakers to improve compliance. Further research should explore barriers to effective practice and interventions for improving occupational health outcomes in similar settings...
