Abstract
Religious practices and spirituality are essential dimensions of human life, particularly during pregnancy, when women face physical, emotional, and psychological challenges. This study investigated the influence of religious practices and spirituality on the fear of childbirth among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. The objectives were to explore the participants' religious practices, assess their levels of spirituality, and determine their levels of fear of childbirth. A cross-sectional descriptive study design was employed, involving 320 pregnant women who completed structured questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including means, frequencies, and percentages. The study focused on the socio-demographic characteristics, religious engagement, spirituality levels, and childbirth-related fears of the respondents. The results revealed that religious practices were highly prevalent, with 100% of Christian respondents attending church and 57.5% of Muslim respondents observing daily prayers. Spirituality levels were notably high, with an overall mean score of 4.94, indicating strong faith, inner peace, and reliance on spiritual beliefs for coping. Fear of childbirth was low, with an overall mean score of 3.37. Participants expressed moderate concerns about pain, complications, and medical interventions but displayed overall confidence in handling childbirth, which may be attributed to their high spirituality. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that religious practices and spirituality significantly influence pregnant women's psychological well-being and reduce their fear of childbirth. The findings highlight the need for nurses to integrate spiritual care into routine antenatal services to address the holistic needs of pregnant women. Recommendations include incorporating spiritual assessments into antenatal care, training healthcare providers on culturally competent care, and encouraging balanced reliance on spirituality and medical practices. Future research should explore the postpartum implications of spirituality and religion, providing insights for comprehensive maternal care...
