Abstract
This study assessed the level of depression among students in selected nursing institutions in Ilorin, Kwara State. The specific objectives were to determine the overall prevalence of depression, identify the varying levels of depression, and examine the factors influencing depressive illness among nursing students. A quantitative research design using a descriptive method was employed to collect and analyze data from nursing students at the Department of Nursing Science, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), and Kwara State College of Nursing (KWASCON), Ilorin. The study was conducted in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, which is located in the North Central geopolitical zone of Nigeria.A structured questionnaire was used to gather data from 293 respondents. The socio-demographic results showed that 40 (13.8%) of the respondents were males, and 253 (86.2%) were females. The majority, 255 (87%), were aged 16-25 years, 36 (12.3%) were 26-35 years, and only 2 (0.7%) were between 36-45 years, with none above 45. Most respondents, 270 (92%), were single, while 23 (8%) were married. In terms of academic level, 126 (43%) were in year one, 90 (30.7%) in year two, and 77 (26.3%) in year three. Regarding religious affiliation, 174 (59.4%) were Muslims, and 119 (40.6%) were Christians. Additionally, 72 (24.6%) were students of the Department of Basic Nursing, College of Nursing Sciences, UITH, while 221 (75.4%) were from KWASCON. The study highlights significant insights into the level, prevalence and factors contributing to depression among nursing students in Ilorin, emphasizing the need for targeted mental health interventions in these institutions...
