Abstract
This study investigates the awareness and uptake of prostate cancer screening among male civil servants in Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja. The primary objectives were to assess awareness levels, determine screening uptake rates, and identify factors influencing these behaviors. Prostate cancer remains a significant public health concern globally, and early screening is essential for timely diagnosis and treatment. A descriptive cross-sectional methodology was employed, involving 140 male civil servants at LASUTH. Data collection was conducted through structured questionnaires, and results were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, and Chi-square tests for hypothesis testing. The results indicate a high level of awareness, with 87.9% of respondents acknowledging prostate cancer's preventability and 90.7% recognizing the need for men above 40 years to undergo screening. However, only 55.7% had been screened, and 52.1% had undergone digital rectal examinations. Factors hindering screening uptake included lack of time (86.4%), high screening costs (81.4%), and fear of the procedure (73.6%). Additionally, 80.7% of respondents cited lack of awareness, while 65.7% identified inaccessibility of screening centers as barriers. Hypothesis testing revealed no significant relationship between socio-demographic variables and screening uptake (p> 0.05). In conclusion, while awareness of prostate cancer screening is relatively high among male civil servants in LASUTH, the uptake rate remains suboptimal due to various barriers. It is recommended that health authorities implement targeted awareness campaigns, subsidize screening costs, and improve accessibility to screening facilities. Future research should explore interventions to address these barriers and promote early detection practices among at-risk populations...
