Abstract
Infertility, defined as the inability to conceive after at least one year of unprotected intercourse, affects an estimated 10–15% of couples worldwide and remains a major public health concern. Beyond its medical implications, infertility exerts profound psychological, emotional, and social burdens, particularly on women in societies where childbearing is strongly tied to identity, marital stability, and social acceptance. Women often experience distress manifested as depression, anxiety, frustration, diminished self-esteem, and social isolation. Coping strategies, therefore, play a critical role in mitigating these challenges and safeguarding mental well-being. This study evaluated the psychological distress experienced by women attending the infertility clinic at People’s Medical Center, Benin City, Edo State, and identified the coping strategies they employ. Using a descriptive design, data were collected through structured questionnaires focusing on distress levels, coping mechanisms, and the influence of socio-demographic factors. Findings from literature and empirical evidence suggest that women adopt diverse coping strategies, including emotional expression, professional counseling, self-care practices, support groups, educational resources, and lifestyle modifications. The effectiveness of these strategies varies, with problem-focused and positive coping approaches linked to reduced distress, while maladaptive strategies such as denial often exacerbate emotional strain. The study underscores the need for healthcare providers to integrate psychological support into infertility care, emphasizing counseling, education, and community-based interventions. By understanding the coping mechanisms employed by women, tailored support systems can be developed to improve their psychological resilience and overall quality of life. Ultimately, this research contributes to enhancing infertility care by addressing both the medical and emotional dimensions of the condition, thereby promoting holistic well-being among affected women ...
