Abstract
Substance abuse is a significant medical and social problem that engulfs every stratum of the community in different ways. Every year, substance misuse brings about 40 million difficult diseases or injuries among the general population. A total of 270 million people are estimated to be using psychoactive substances globally in 2021. Participants were selected through a convenience sampling technique and research study data were collected through structured questionnaires on nurses' knowledge and attitude towards substance abuse patients. Formal research participation consent was obtained from participants and the study was carried out among nurses. A descriptive survey design was used and the sample size was 100. The study examined nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and how to improve competence in caring for substance abuse patients at UniOsun Teaching Hospital, Osogbo. The study findings revealed good understanding of substance abuse and positive attitudes towards substance abuse patients by nurses at UniOsun Teaching Hospital, Osogbo. The findings from the study revealed that 87% of the nurses agreed that substance abuse involves the harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances, including alcohol and illicit drugs. Lack of information and education about the consequences of substance use can lead to drug abuse (93%), strongly agree 44%, strongly disagree (37%), and 37% disagreed with the statement that nurses treat substance abuse patients poorly or refer to them using derogatory terms. All the respondents agreed that a non-judgmental approach is essential for providing client-centered, sensitive care. Nevertheless, the findings on improving nurses' professional competence in managing substance abuse patients established that 68% of nurses strongly agreed, and 32% agreed that nurses at UniOsun Teaching Hospital, Osogbo should acquire more knowledge and skills on substance abuse management....
