Abstract
This study evaluates visual impairment as a major determinant of road traffic accidents among commercial motorcyclists in Ilorin. It made use of a descriptive survey research design method with a sample of fifty (50) respondents, which was selected using non-probability sampling techniques of convenience techniques using Taro Yamane’s statistical formula (N/(1+Ne)2) in Ilorin. Data were collected through self-structured questionnaires. Simple Percentage was used to analyze the research question, together with the mean score and the standard deviation value. The research revealed that an impressive 92% of respondents strongly agreed that visual impairment affects their ability to judge distances while riding, resulting in a mean score of 3.92 (± 0.27). Also, a substantial majority, 72% of respondents, strongly agreed that poor vision increases the risk of road traffic accidents, as evidenced by a high mean score of 3.72 (± 0.45). While commercial motorcyclists with visual impairments are more likely to experience accidents due to their inability to see road signs and traffic signals, this was indicated by a mean score of 3.78 (± 0.50). The following recommendations were made. It was suggested that authorities should introduce mandatory, regular vision screening as part of the licensing and renewal process for commercial motorcyclists. It was also revealed that public health agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) should collaborate to launch awareness campaigns targeted at commercial motorcyclists. While vision-related education should be incorporated into motorcycle rider training programs. Motorcyclists need to understand the direct impact that visual impairments can have on their ability to drive safely and react to road hazards. Similarly, Transport authorities should enforce strict regulations that require commercial motorcyclists to present a valid eye health certificate before being issued or renewing their licenses...
