Abstract
Wound dressing is a clinical procedure mostly undertaken by nursing staff that requires excellent skills and knowledge. Nurses play a crucial role in ensuring the therapeutic success and overall patient outcome, reducing infection risk through strict adherence to aseptic practices during wound dressing. However, various factors can influence nurses’ implementation of aseptic techniques during wound dressing. Identify the factors that influence the practice of aseptic wound dressing among nurses, assess the practice of aseptic wound dressing among nurses, and identify the benefits associated with the practice of aseptic wound dressing among nurses. Hence, this study was carried out to investigate the factors influencing aseptic wound dressing practices among nurses at the University of Ilorin teaching hospital. The objectives of the study were to Quantitative research design using a descriptive survey method was used for the study. The instrument used was a semi-structured questionnaire and 84 questionnaires were analyzed using statistical package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25. Findings revealed that nurses had an average level of practice of aseptic wound dressing, which was, however, influenced by various factors. Most of the respondents highlighted that workload (64.3%) and availability of personal protective equipment (61.3%) were the factors influencing the practice of aseptic wound dressing. Recommendations were made to nurses to ensure they strictly follow hospital protocols and evidence-based guidelines for wound dressing. The hospital management should ensure the availability of sterile supplies, PPE, and adequate staffing, accompanied by regular training sessions and workshops on aseptic techniques. The government should allocate funding to equip health care facilities and increase staffing to prevent burnout...
