Abstract
Introduction: This study assessed the psychological well-being of pregnant women attending antenatal clinics at Igando General Hospital, Lagos State. It explored their knowledge of mental health issues during pregnancy, health-seeking behaviors, and the effects of mental health problems on their quality of life. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional design was adopted, involving 160 pregnant women selected through proportional stratified sampling. Data were collected using a structured, validated questionnaire. Analysis was conducted using SPSS version 21, with results summarized through descriptive statistics and chi-square tests to identify significant relationships. Results: Findings revealed that 67.5% of respondents had basic education, and 37.5% earned over 50,000 monthly. Many reported symptoms of psychological distress, including persistent worry (33.1%) and feelings of detachment (34.2%). Health-seeking behaviors were high, with 44.4% of respondents indicating they had practical support during pregnancy. The study also found significant relationships between socioeconomic status and knowledge of mental health problems (p  0.05) and between knowledge and the effects of mental health issues on quality of life (p  0.05). Conclusion and Recommendations: Psychological well-being significantly affects the quality of life during pregnancy. Findings indicate the need for targeted mental health interventions, improved antenatal education, and enhanced social support systems. Recommendations include integrating mental health screenings into antenatal care, increasing awareness of mental health issues, and promoting community-based support programs. Further research should focus on the long-term impacts of psychological distress during pregnancy and effective intervention strategies. ...
