Abstract
Infertility remains a significant reproductive health concern, particularly in Nigeria, where societal expectations place intense pressure on women to conceive. Beyond the physical inability to conceive, infertility exerts emotional, psychological, and social burdens that influence women's overall well-being and quality of life. Despite the availability of treatment options, coping mechanisms and treatment experiences vary across different demographics. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among women attending the gynecology clinic of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital. Using a structured questionnaire, data were collected from 76 respondents selected through purposive sampling. The instrument captured sociodemographic details, emotional and social effects of infertility, coping strategies, treatment methods, and challenges encountered. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and presented in tables and percentages. The findings revealed that most respondents were between the ages of 26 and 35, married, and possessed a tertiary education. A significant majority (77.2%) experienced emotional distress, while 63.2% reported marital conflict due to infertility. Coping strategies were predominantly medical, with 80.7% seeking hospital-based treatment and 86% undergoing hormonal therapy. Religious coping was also evident, though psychological and group support systems were underutilized. Despite treatment efforts, only 57.9% reported improvement, and financial constraint (68.4%) was identified as the major barrier. The study concludes that infertility has far-reaching psychological and social implications, yet women predominantly rely on medical and religious means of coping. Nurses and healthcare providers should integrate counseling and emotional support into fertility care, while society must reduce stigma through awareness campaigns. Government interventions are recommended to subsidize infertility treatments and support holistic, patient-centered care....
