Filariasis is a parasitic disease transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes and remains a significant public health concern in many tropical and subtropical regions, including Nigeria. The disease can cause severe physical disabilities and social stigma, especially in rural populations where environmental and socio-economic conditions favor mosquito proliferation. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the community’s understanding of filariasis, examine factors influencing its occurrence, and recommend strategies to enhance prevention. A descriptive survey research design was employed, and data were collected using a structured and validated questionnaire administered to 399 randomly selected respondents. The questionnaire explored participants’ knowledge of the causes, symptoms, transmission modes, and preventive measures of filariasis, as well as environmental and behavioral factors that contribute to its spread. Findings indicated that while a majority of respondents were generally aware of filariasis and recognized mosquito bites as a key transmission route, detailed knowledge was limited, particularly among individuals with lower educational attainment. Environmental and behavioral factors such as poor sanitation, stagnant water, inadequate drainage, and irregular use of insecticide-treated nets were identified as major contributors to the persistence of the disease. Although many respondents acknowledged preventive measures—including proper waste disposal, environmental cleanliness, use of mosquito nets, and community health education consistent application of these strategies was low. The study recommends implementing intensified community-based health education programs, improving sanitation infrastructure, expanding the distribution and proper use of insecticide-treated nets, and conducting continuous mass drug administration campaigns. Strengthening knowledge and promoting sustained preventive behaviors are crucial for reducing the prevalence and impact of filariasis in the community.
