Abstract
This study assesses soft skills competency among Social Studies students in Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo. Descriptive survey research design was used to carry out the research. Simple random sampling technique was used to select the respondents for the study. One hundred (100) students (both NCE and Degree) were selected from Social Studies Department in School of Arts and Social Sciences, Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo. For NCE, students from part 2-3 were selected while for the degree, students from level 2-4 were selected. The data collected from the respondents was analyzed using statistical tools of tables, charts, mean score and standard deviation and t-test to test the hypothesis of the study. From the findings of this study, it was revealed that Social Studies students perceived soft skills as a contributory factor to their academic success. This means that Social Studies students understand that soft skills are important skills with which their academic success can be achieved. Also, the finding shows that soft skills competencies among Social Studies Students have a positive effect on their productivity as they can lead, manage, evaluate and work with a team. It was concluded that students’ perceptions of the contribution of soft skills and positive attitudes towards the same have a positive effect on their academic success. It was therefore recommended that the government should mandate the integration of soft skills development into the national curriculum, provide funding and resources for continuous professional development programs for educators, and offer incentives to tertiary institutions that actively implement and demonstrate successful soft skills development programs. Also, there is a need for education stakeholders to provide support for research initiatives focused on identifying effective practices for soft skills development....
