Abstract
This study investigated the disposal methods of female hygiene products among female bankers in Owerri Municipal, Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted using a structured, closed-ended questionnaire administered face-to-face over an eight-week period to a sample of 384 female bankers selected via a multi-stage sampling technique data were then analyzed with SPSS version 23. The findings revealed that 32% of respondents were aged 35–44 years, while only 4.2% were 55 and above, with 52.3% having tertiary education and 38.8% holding postgraduate degrees. In terms of product usage, the majority of the respondents 63.5% regularly used sanitary pads, 16.7% used tampons, 13.8% used panty liners, 5.5% used menstrual cups, and 0.5% used feminine wipes. Disposal practices were predominantly poor, as most of the respondents 60.9% disposed of used products occasionally, 27.6% weekly, 9.4% daily, and 2.1% never disposed at work. Notably, 71.6% discarded sanitary pads in sealed plastic bags, 66.2% used public trash bins. The study also found that the majority of respondents experienced challenges such as a lack of private and hygienic disposal facilities (62.5%), discomfort disposing of products at work (89.8%), and health concerns (64.8%). The results indicate that most female bankers in Owerri Municipal engage in unsatisfactory and environmentally unfriendly disposal practices, underscoring the need for improved workplace disposal facilities and greater awareness of proper menstrual hygiene management....
