Abstract
The rapid growth of cryptocurrencies has introduced new challenges to tax administration systems worldwide, particularly in developing economies where regulatory frameworks are still evolving. This study examines the relationship between cryptocurrency usage and tax evasion, as well as its implications for public revenue generation in Nigeria. Cryptocurrencies, characterized by decentralization, anonymity, and borderless transactions, provide opportunities for individuals and businesses to conceal income and avoid taxation, thereby undermining government revenue. The study adopts a quantitative research approach using secondary data sourced from the Federal Inland Revenue Service, the Central Bank of Nigeria, and international financial reports. The analysis focuses on trends in cryptocurrency adoption, tax compliance levels, and government revenue performance over time. Findings reveal that increased cryptocurrency transactions are associated with reduced tax transparency, making it difficult for tax authorities to track taxable income and enforce compliance. This has contributed to revenue leakages and weakened the capacity of the government to fund public services and infrastructure. Furthermore, the study identifies key challenges such as inadequate legal frameworks, lack of technical expertise, and limited access to blockchain analytics tools. Despite these challenges, cryptocurrencies also present opportunities for improving tax systems through enhanced digital tracking mechanisms if properly regulated. The study concludes that while cryptocurrencies pose significant risks to effective tax administration and public revenue generation, these risks can be mitigated through robust regulatory policies, improved technological capacity, and international cooperation. It recommends that policymakers strengthen tax laws, invest in digital monitoring tools, and enhance collaboration with global institutions to ensure efficient taxation of cryptocurrency-related activities while promoting transparency and accountability in public finance....
