Abstract
The persistent challenge of poverty and limited access to financial services continues to hinder economic development, particularly in developing countries. Traditional financial systems often exclude a significant portion of the population due to barriers such as a lack of identification, high transaction costs, limited banking infrastructure, and strict eligibility requirements. In this context, cryptocurrency has emerged as an innovative financial technology with the potential to enhance financial inclusion and reduce poverty. This study examines the role of cryptocurrency in reducing poverty and improving access to finance. It explores how digital currencies, powered by blockchain technology, provide alternative financial services such as peer-to-peer payments, cross-border transfers, savings, and access to decentralized financial (DeFi) platforms. These innovations enable individuals without access to traditional banking systems to participate in the global economy. The study adopts a qualitative research approach, relying on secondary data from academic literature, policy reports, and case studies. Findings suggest that cryptocurrency can empower unbanked and underbanked populations by offering low-cost, fast, and borderless financial services. It also highlights the role of decentralized finance in providing lending, borrowing, and investment opportunities without intermediaries. However, the study identifies several challenges, including regulatory uncertainty, price volatility, cybersecurity risks, lack of financial literacy, and limited technological infrastructure. These factors may hinder the widespread adoption of cryptocurrency for poverty alleviation. The study concludes that while cryptocurrency is not a standalone solution to poverty, it serves as a powerful complementary tool for financial inclusion. It recommends improved regulation, digital literacy programs, and supportive policy frameworks to maximize the benefits of cryptocurrency in enhancing access to finance and reducing poverty....
