Abstract
This study investigates the influence of Nollywood celebrities' mode of dressing on the fashion style of undergraduates at the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, Imo State. Nollywood, as the Nigerian film industry, has gained significant popularity and influence, particularly among young people who view celebrities as role models. The study aims to examine how the fashion choices of Nollywood celebrities affect the dressing styles of students, their perceptions of fashion, and the role social media plays in amplifying these influences. Through a mixed-method approach, data were collected using questionnaires administered to 120 undergraduates across various departments. The findings reveal that Nollywood celebrities significantly influence the fashion choices of students, with many respondents admitting to imitating the styles of their favorite stars. The research also highlights that social media plays a crucial role in spreading celebrity fashion trends among undergraduates. However, while these influences contribute positively to personal confidence and self-expression, they also pose challenges, including financial strain and potential academic distraction. The study concludes that Nollywood's fashion influence is a double-edged sword, offering both benefits and drawbacks to students' personal identity and academic performance. Recommendations are made for a balanced approach to celebrity influence, advocating for the prioritization of academics while still appreciating fashion as a form of self-expression.
