Abstract
The rapid evolution of digital technology and internet penetration has significantly transformed global business operations, enabling organizations to expand beyond geographical limitations through electronic commerce (e-commerce). Despite these global advancements, many local businesses in Nigeria continue to rely on traditional, manual and semi-digital trading systems that restrict their market reach, reduce operational efficiency and limit competitiveness in the emerging digital economy. This study focuses on the design and implementation of a web-based e-commerce platform specifically tailored to support local businesses by providing an affordable, scalable and secure environment for online commercial activities. The research examined the existing manual business practices adopted by local vendors and identified major challenges such as limited online visibility, poor record-keeping, inefficient inventory management, insecure and informal payment processes and lack of structured customer relationship systems. A comprehensive review of related literature was conducted, incorporating established technology adoption theories including the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Diffusion of Innovations (DoI) theory and the Technology Organization Environment (TOE) framework. These models provided a theoretical foundation for understanding the determinants of digital platform adoption among small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The study adopted the Incremental Software Development Model to ensure systematic and modular system implementation. The proposed platform was developed using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP, with MySQL serving as the relational database management system. The system architecture followed a three-tier structure comprising the presentation layer, application layer and data layer to enhance scalability, security and maintainability. Key features implemented include secure user authentication, vendor registration and product management, shopping cart and checkout functionality, order processing and tracking, payment processing simulation, review and rating system and an administrative dashboard for system monitoring. ...
