Abstract
This study investigated the prevalence of Salmonella Typhi infection (Typhoid fever) among adults aged 18–65 years attending Comprehensive Health Centre, Isolo, Akure, Ondo State. The study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of typhoid fever, identify unhygienic practices associated with the infection, and examine preventive measures against the disease among the study population. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. A total of 120 respondents were selected using a structured questionnaire, while laboratory screening results obtained from the outpatient clinic were used to determine the prevalence of Salmonella Typhi infection. Of the 120 respondents screened, 70 (58.3%) tested positive for Salmonella Typhi infection, while 50 (41.7%) tested negative. Data collected were analyzed using frequency tables and simple percentages. The findings revealed a relatively high prevalence of Salmonella Typhi infection (53.3%) among adults attending Comprehensive Health Centre, Isolo, Akure. The study further identified major unhygienic practices associated with typhoid fever, including drinking untreated water, poor hand washing after toilet use, poor environmental sanitation, e.t.c. Respondents also identified important preventive measures such as drinking treated or boiled water, regular hand washing with soap, maintaining good environmental sanitation, proper refuse disposal, consuming properly cooked food, washing fruits and vegetables before consumption, avoiding food from unhygienic vendors, e.t.c. The study concluded that typhoid fever remains a significant public health problem in the study area despite respondents' awareness of preventive measures. It was recommended that government and relevant health authorities should improve access to safe drinking water, strengthen environmental sanitation programmes, intensify public health education on hygiene and food safety, enforce food hygiene regulations, encourage early diagnosis and treatment, and promote typhoid vaccination to reduce the burden of Salmonella Typhi infection among the population. ...
